Book Review: Fallen by Lauren Kate

Summary:
There’s something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.
Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price’s attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He’s the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.
Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce–and goes out of his way to make that very clear–she can’t let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret . . . even if it kills her.

Review:
This is the first book in a series.  The next book in the series, Torment, is not yet released.  Tempering my disappointment of being in the middle of yet another series (I'm reading 14 unfinished series at last count!) was the fact that I enjoyed this book more than I though I would.  It is a paranormal romance and I won't say more because I hate plot spoilers!  After reading Becca Fitzpatrick's paranormal romance Hush, Hush,I wasn't expecting much from Fallen but was surprised when it turned out to be much better than Hush, Hush.

There are some definite flaws and weaknesses yet it was still an entertaining read. Fallen follows the girl at a boarding school entranced by cute but unavailable boy plot. There were some surprises, but these were outweighed by a lot of predictability. The protagonist displays some sensibility, although the character development falls short in my opinion. The descriptions of her feelings when they kiss harken back to the Twilight series but Stephenie Meyer does the "he's so beautiful it hurts" thing much better. While enjoyable, Fallen is a somewhat simple story that left me wanting something more satisfying, like the wonderful but underrated Vampire Academy series.

Just One Gripe:
The ever-present "shadows" in this book kind of freaked me out.

The Best Thing About This Book:
The "past lives" idea.

Appropriate for a younger audience:
Yes, although if they are too young the "shadows" may be scary.
